II Samuel 12:13 “And David said unto Nathan, ‘I have sinned again the LORD.’ And Nathan said unto David, ‘The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.’
A prophet is one who speaks for God and Nathan is one of the great Old Testament prophets. Nathan was a prophet in Israel during the reigns of King David and David’s son King Solomon. This prophet is best known for his correction of David because of his sin regarding Bathsheba. In this Singleton sculpture of Nathan, the arm is outstretched in accusation, with the hand clenched and a finger pointing outward. Nathan charges the King of Israel with a most heinous crime. David slept with his loyal soldier’s wife and then had him murdered. The eyes in the sculpture are eyes of indictment. The viewer of this sculpture should feel disturbed and shaken by this holy prophet that sees through any façade into the inner man.
