I have flown over the tundra of Katmai, Alaska, where Funnel Creek and the Moraine River converge about 20 times over the years during the salmon run. The wilderness up on Moraine is the ideal place for me to employ my immersive style of photography. The bear activity depends on the salmon run; once the fish arrived, at one point on Tuesday on Funnel Creek, we counted 24 bears in our sight at one single time. One almost albino-coloured three-year-old bear fishing stood out. At his relaxed, predictable behaviour, I spotted my opportunity. My standard working distance with a remote camera is around 4 feet, where the most textural detail can be captured with a prime lens. It's a low percentage shot, as my depth of field in the rain clouds of Katmai will be three inches at best.

Bears only look like cuddly teddies when they are between two and three years old. Catch their childhood at the peak time, and there is a chance you can capture a teddy bear face.
